The United States, Japan, Australia and the Philippines are carrying out joint naval exercises in the South China Sea this week, according to the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. The drills come as regional friction remains high over Beijing’s sweeping maritime claims.
Officials said the exercise is intended to strengthen cooperation among the four militaries and support a free and open Indo-Pacific. The participating countries have stepped up security coordination in response to growing concerns about assertive Chinese activity in disputed waters.
The South China Sea remains one of Asia’s most volatile flashpoints, with overlapping territorial claims and frequent encounters between rival vessels. The latest drills add to a broader pattern of allied naval activity aimed at signaling deterrence and reinforcing international maritime norms.
