The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the first generic version of Wegovy, the obesity treatment made by Novo Nordisk. The decision could widen access to a drug that has become widely used for weight management while also intensifying price competition in a fast-growing market.
Wegovy’s active ingredient, semaglutide, has helped drive strong demand for GLP-1 medications, but high out-of-pocket costs have kept many patients from using it. A lower-cost generic may give insurers, pharmacies, and patients a new option, though the timeline for broad availability will depend on manufacturing and distribution.
Novo Nordisk’s branded product remains on the market, but the FDA’s move marks a major shift for one of the most recognizable drugs in the weight-loss category. Generic entry often pushes prices down over time, especially when multiple suppliers enter the market.
The approval also reflects growing pressure on the pharmaceutical industry to improve access to high-demand medicines. For patients and doctors, the key question now is whether the new version will translate into meaningful savings and broader treatment access.
