U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in an interview with NBC News, said that currently no plan has been set for a meeting between Donald Trump, the president of the United States, and Masoud Pezeshkian, the head of the government of the Islamic Republic, but Washington is prepared for such a meeting.

In response to a question about the likelihood of the visit, Rubio said Trump is ready to meet and talk with others because he believes that engagement is important for solving problems.

He said: “I don’t think anything is planned right now, but we certainly are prepared for something like that, especially if there is a prospect of reaching a positive outcome.”

The U.S. foreign minister described Washington’s ultimate goal as preventing the Islamic Republic from obtaining nuclear weapons and said: “Iran can never have nuclear weapons.”

Rubio also, criticizing the Iranian government and the actions of the Islamic Republic’s proxy forces in the region, said that if reaching this goal through a positive way is possible, the United States welcomes it.

Rubio called the Islamic Republic a “hardline religious government” and said: “You can see how they treat their own people.”
