🔶 German general becomes head of NATO’s military committee

General Carsten Breuer, Germany’s highest-ranking military official, was elected as the new chair of NATO’s Military Committee.

Breuer was selected on Saturday, September 19 (28 Shahrivar), at a meeting of the committee in Copenhagen, as the successor to Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone of Italy. After his election, he said that NATO faces serious duties and that the issue is ensuring security and peace in Europe and beyond.

Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor, described Breuer’s election as a sign that Germany is accepting more responsibility in NATO.

Boris Pistorius, Germany’s defense minister, also pointed to the Russian threat and emphasized the need to adopt a clear path within NATO.

The chair of the Military Committee is NATO Secretary General’s most important military adviser and relays the recommendations of senior military commanders of member countries to the political bodies of the alliance.

Breuer has been the Inspector General of the German Armed Forces since March 2023, and is the country’s highest-ranking military officer.
