France has deployed a A400M military aircraft to drop flame retardant over wildfires in Gironde, as crews fought to stop flames reaching Bordeaux, 30km away.
Winds threatened to push the fire closer; soldiers joined firefighters and 1.5 million face masks were rushed to residents.
Wildfires across southern Europe have displaced over 250,000 people this week, including 70,000 in central Spain, where one man has died — the region's first fatality.
