Colombia announced that this country has severed its diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Bogotá cited security concerns, alleged Iranian ties with terrorist groups, violations of human rights, and the Iranian government’s actions in the region, as well as the nuclear case, as reasons for this decision.

In a statement dated September 24, 2026 (Mehr 2), the Colombian government announced that the formal severing of relations took effect as of September 19 [28 Shahrivar], but that consular relations between the two countries would continue.

Colombia described this decision as being in line with its foreign policy principles regarding national security, hemisphere security, and the fight against transnational crimes. The statement referred to links between the government of the Islamic Republic and international terrorist groups and terrorist groups connected to drug trafficking which, according to Bogotá, threaten Colombia’s security.

The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also named “documented violations of human rights” within Iran and confirmed attacks against countries that are not parties to the conflict in the Middle East as other reasons for cutting ties.
