Bangladesh’s army chief has announced that Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus will lead an interim government after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country amid weeks of mass protests. The move comes as the South Asian nation faces its most serious political crisis in years, with unrest leaving more than 200 people dead and prompting widespread calls for change.

Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman said the interim administration would be tasked with restoring order, stabilizing the country and preparing the ground for new elections. Yunus, widely known for his work in microfinance and social development, has urged calm as violence continues in parts of the country.

Hasina’s departure marks a dramatic turn in Bangladesh’s political landscape, following escalating demonstrations over governance, economic hardship and allegations of authoritarian rule. The appointment of Yunus is seen as an attempt to steer the country toward a civilian-led transition and broader democratic reforms.

Authorities have not yet announced a timeline for elections, but the interim government is expected to face immediate pressure to end the violence, restore public confidence and begin a credible political transition.
