🔶 The New York Times: Tehran rejected the proposed agreement Trump sent via Baghdad

As reported by The New York Times, Ali Al-Zaydi, the new prime minister of Iraq, carried a proposal from Donald Trump, the U.S. president, during his trip to Iran. The newspaper published the news citing statements by Iranian and Iraqi officials.

Al-Zaydi met and held talks with officials of the Islamic Republic on Thursday, July 23 (1 Mordad), including Masoud Pezeshkian, the president, as well as Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf, the chairman of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, and Iran’s chief negotiator. This is considered his first trip to Tehran since taking office.

As Iranian officials told The New York Times, the Islamic Republic has no interest in a “temporary agreement” that would not determine the final status of the Strait of Hormuz. The status of this vital waterway is one of the key points of negotiations between Tehran and Washington.

According to the Times, Israel, Ali Al-Zaydi’s office said that the Iraqi prime minister traveled to Tehran to advance the process of dialogue in order to establish peace, and also promised that Iraqi territory would not be used to carry out attacks against the Islamic Republic.
