🔻Saudi Arabia: A Houthi drone was intercepted near Mecca
Saudi Arabia’s air defense says it intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by the Houthis of Yemen before it entered the restricted airspace of Mecca. The incident took place amid an increase in Houthi attacks on sites in Saudi Arabia.
Turki Al-Maliki, spokesperson for the coalition led by Saudi Arabia in the Yemen war, said in a statement that this is the second time the Houthis have targeted Mecca; the first time was linked to the firing of a ballistic missile in July 2017.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, September 15, for a brief period, a security warning was issued in Mecca, Jeddah, and Taif, and Saudi Arabia’s civil defense authorities later announced that “the danger has been lifted.”
The warning for Mecca was issued at a time when the city had not previously seen such an event during the latest round of clashes.
A day earlier, the coalition said, Houthi missile and drone attacks on three Saudi cities had injured 13 civilians and damaged seven houses and two cars.
The Houthis have rejected any threat against Mecca or other Muslim holy sites.
