The Netherlands, following an increase in geopolitical tensions, transferred 86 tonnes of its gold reserves to London
🔸The Dutch central bank announced that, due to an “increase in geopolitical unrest,” it moved part of its gold reserves—about 86 tonnes—from the United States and Canada to London.
🔸The bank said in a statement on Wednesday, the eleventh of Shahrivar, that with this step, it would be able to use its gold reserves more quickly in “critical conditions.”
🔸The Dutch central bank says that the gold reserves kept in London are easier to trade than reserves held in New York and Ottawa.
🔸Olaf Sleypen, head of the Dutch central bank, said: “With this action, we have increased the usability of our gold reserves. Our assumption is that we will never need to use this gold, but in any case, strengthening our resilience and preparedness is necessary.”
🔸The Dutch central bank said the total gold reserves of the country amounted to 612.4 tonnes, reaching a value of 72.2 billion euros at the end of 2025.
🔸Before the transfer, the Dutch central bank held 31.3% of its gold in New York and 19.7% in Ottawa. After this reshuffling, the share of each of these two cities in the Netherlands’ gold reserves rose to 18.5%.
🔸The share of gold held in London also increased from 18.1% to 32.1%. The bank continues to hold 30.8% of its gold reserves within the Netherlands.
🔸According to the Dutch central bank, part of the gold transfer was carried out through buying and selling, and part through physical transfers.
