Moroccan officials have called for a comprehensive investigation in Italy into the death of a man of Moroccan descent during his detention by police.

The release of video images showing police officers’ confrontation with Abdelrahim Fakir sparked protests in the city of Bologna; protests that escalated into clashes and left dozens injured.

Moroccan human rights groups have called for accountability from officials and have, at the same time, condemned anti-immigrant statements and discourse in Italy.

Italian prosecutors have said they have launched an investigation into the charge of “unintentional homicide.”
