Results of a study in the UK show that regular drinking of beverages such as tea and coffee at very high temperatures increases the risk of developing esophageal cancer.
Researchers say the study, which involved nearly one million people, is the largest investigation to date into the link between very hot drinks and esophageal cancer.
In the study, the risk of developing esophageal cancer in people who drank their drinks as “very hot” was about three times higher than in those who drank tea or coffee that was “warm”; however, experts say the overall likelihood of developing this type of cancer is low.
Very hot drinks can damage the lining cells of the esophagus as they pass toward the stomach.
