Members of the International Criminal Court (ICC) voted unanimously to remove Karim Khan, the court’s senior prosecutor, over allegations of sexual misconduct.

Mr. Khan, who was appointed as the ICC’s third prosecutor in 2021, had been suspended last month, and the decision to remove him was approved with 82 votes in favor.

The court’s oversight panel in June concluded that he committed “serious breach of duties and serious misconduct” by engaging in inappropriate sexual relations with a junior staff member of the court and attempting to prevent that person’s complaint from being pursued.

Mr. Khan has repeatedly denied all allegations against him. His lawyer said that his client would challenge the “legality and fairness of this decision through all available legal mechanisms.”

It is not yet clear what legal avenues remain for the removed prosecutor.
