🔻Hosein Samaiif Safar, Iran’s Minister of Science, says boycotting the TOEFL test for Iranians is “medieval-era behavior.”
Mr. Samaiif Safar said that the Organization for Educational Measurement is responsible for managing these exams and that it is currently reviewing the issue.
According to him, “the enemy’s goal is to use sanctions to force the country to surrender.”
The TOEFL test assesses English language skills for admission to university and academic work. Its internet-based version evaluates the four skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing, and its results are accepted by many universities and educational institutions in different countries. The American institute ETS is the organizer of this exam.
In response to BBC Persian, the ETS institute confirmed that the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control has suspended General License G, and therefore the administration of TOEFL and GRE exams in Iran was immediately stopped.
The institute says the decision was made in order to comply with U.S. sanctions laws, and it will contact the affected applicants directly.
