🔶 Trump: Iran has asked for talks to continue
Donald Trump, the President of the United States, said that the Islamic Republic has asked Washington to allow the negotiations to continue and that the United States has agreed to the request. He also stressed that Washington has explicitly told Tehran that the ceasefire is "over". At the same time, a Qatari delegation went to Iran on Friday to reduce tensions between the two countries and met with Abbas Araqchi, Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, in Mashhad.
The delegation, led by Majid Mohammad Al-Ansari, the First Prime Minister’s Adviser and Spokesman of Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, discussed with Araqchi efforts to reduce tensions between Tehran and Washington.
The website “Al-Araby Al-Jadeed,” citing an Iranian source, reported that the talks were conducted within the framework of the efforts of mediators to implement the commitments of both sides under a memorandum of understanding previously achieved with the mediation of Qatar and Pakistan.
Reuters had earlier, citing a knowledgeable source, reported that the Qatari delegation’s talks in Iran are conducted in coordination with the United States.
According to the source, implementing the provisions of the Tehran-Washington memorandum, examining the reasons behind the recent escalation of tensions, and disagreements over shipping in the Strait of Hormuz are among the axes of these discussions.
The aim of these efforts has been described as creating the groundwork for the resumption of broader negotiations between Iran and the United States.
The New York Times also reported that Qatar is holding simultaneous talks with Iran and the United States to reduce tensions.
According to the newspaper, Doha, which played a role in achieving a ceasefire between the two countries last month, has again stepped in to contain the crisis, though it is still unclear whether these efforts can prevent the cycle of tensions from repeating.
Axios also reported that Qatar, Pakistan, and other regional mediators are trying to revive the process of negotiations on the nuclear agreement, while reducing tensions.
According to sources cited by the outlet, the immediate goal of the mediators is to reach an agreement to reduce tensions, and then determine when the next round of negotiations will be held between the technical teams of the two sides.
