🔶 Several killed in a wildfire in Spain
Dry weather and high temperatures have once again led to widespread wildfires in Andalusia, in southern Spain. Following the outbreak of a fire in this region, at least 11 people have died, according to reports that some of them were British citizens.
Antonio Sanz, Andalusia’s health minister, confirmed these figures. The Andalusia emergency services center had reported on Thursday evening that 12 people had been killed.
The wildfire began on Thursday, July 9, in the town of Les Gaiardos in the province of Almería, about 300 kilometers northeast of Málaga. The regional government said that some of the victims, while fleeing, were trapped inside their vehicles by the flames and died. Spain’s TV network also reported that these people burned alive in their cars.
According to the report, about 10 people were also injured, and some of them were taken to hospitals for treatment. Also, according to officials and a Reuters report, 19 people remain missing.
Antonio Sanz said that four people who died inside their vehicle are believed to have been British citizens, because the controls of their car were on the right-hand side.
In addition, seven other bodies that have been found appear to have been occupants of the vehicles. These people abandoned their cars and had tried to escape the clutches of the fire on foot, but were unsuccessful.
