The right-wing “Alternative for Germany” party won a historic election in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, finishing first with about 44% of the vote. However, since it did not secure an absolute majority, it cannot form a new government in this state. The main parties in Germany also reject any coalition with this party.
In this election, Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democratic Party, the German chancellor, suffered a severe defeat, with about 18.5%.
