While flights by foreign airlines to Iran have practically been halted amid war and regional tensions, the United States has imposed fresh sanctions on Iran’s aviation industry that could make the return of these flights, even after security risks decline, more complicated and difficult.

On September 8, the U.S. Treasury Department announced that it is sanctioning 27 Iranian airlines and nine individuals and companies associated with Iran’s aviation industry.

The ministry said that, as part of an “economic isolation operation” against Iran, it targets “all remaining Iranian airlines.” Several airlines, including Mahan Air and Iran Air, had already been covered by U.S. sanctions.

At the same time, the U.S. suspended several licenses related to part of flights and aviation services connected to Iran, and warned financial institutions about supply networks for aircraft and parts for Iran.
