Kayhan, the newspaper under the authority of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, in an editorial with an emphasis on the necessity of the Islamic Republic’s withdrawal from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), wrote: “Continuing membership in the NPT leaves nothing else but paving the way for threats, sanctions, plots, and attacks under the nuclear pretext.”

In this editorial, while referring to the International Atomic Energy Agency as having “turned into a spying arm and a political lever of the enemies against the Islamic Republic,” it stated: “The Islamic Republic has no choice but to withdraw from the NPT, and the experience of a quarter century of spying, the provision of false and fabricated reports, planting the seeds of maximum pressure, and the cowardly attack on the country are the reasons for this.”

In recent weeks, too, several members of the Islamic Consultative Assembly have called for the Islamic Republic’s withdrawal from the NPT.
