🔶 International Criminal Court official: US sanctions stem from a misinterpretation

The acting prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, in his first interview since taking up the post, said that the sanctions and attacks by the US government against this institution were due to a “misinterpretation” by Washington.

Mame Mandiaye Niang, the Senegalese prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, said in an exclusive interview with AFP that the Court does not intend to violate the sovereignty of states and does not attribute such a role to itself.

He added: “We know we’re not the world’s police, and we are fully aware of that.”

During Donald Trump’s presidency, the United States imposed a set of sanctions against officials of the International Criminal Court.

Washington is outraged by the Court’s decision to issue an arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel.

The United States is not a member of the International Criminal Court and did not adopt the Rome Statute, the founding document of the Court.

Israel, Russia, and China are also not members of the Court.
