The newspaper “Welt am Sonntag” has reported that, after an attempt to attack Leipzig airport, investigations by Germany’s security authorities end directly at the Russian military intelligence service.

Based on confidential investigation documents, the paper said that a suspect linked to the Russian army intelligence service has been identified as the person responsible for providing support for this operation, and these findings are considered the basis for the German government’s decision to blame Russia for this drone-attack attempt.

On Tuesday, September 1 (10 Shahrivar), the German government announced Russia as responsible for an attempt to attack Leipzig/Halle airport with a drone carrying explosive materials in early August.

An allegation that, of course, was rejected by Russia’s foreign minister, who was prompted to make sharp remarks on the matter. Sergei Lavrov criticized the German authorities for not providing any evidence, adding: “They saw a drone and decided that its appearance looks like a Russian drone.”

Moscow and Berlin are experiencing tense days. Germany has announced the closure of the “Russian House” in Berlin and the Russian consulate general in Bonn. In addition, entry restrictions for Russian nationals have been tightened.

Russia, in turn, in response to Germany’s actions over the drone incident in Leipzig, shut down the German consulate general in Saint Petersburg.

On Sunday, September 6, Sergei Lavrov told a reporter from his country’s state television: “This is, generally speaking, the start of a real war. They expelled the consulate general from Bonn. They are shutting down the ‘Russian House’ in Berlin. I remember that before the start of the Second World War, the Germans also closed their diplomatic representations.”

Now, however, the German government has obtained more documents on the matter and announced that, according to the findings of investigators, a Russian national entered Germany through Turkey and later left the country for Serbia via Berlin-Brandenburg airport.

Based on the information published by the newspaper “Welt am Sonntag,” investigators even at the time this Russian national entered knew that he was linked to circles close to the Russian military intelligence service, but nevertheless, after his arrival, he was not pursued or placed under surveillance.

It has been said that this person is currently in Russia.

In early August, a drone carrying explosive materials was discovered near Ukrainian cargo planes at Leipzig airport. This airport is a hub for the transit and delivery of military aid to Ukraine.
