Financial Times, in a report about a new round of tension between Washington and Tehran, wrote that the government of Donald Trump, the U.S. president, is no longer willing to return to the short-term agreement from June and is seeking a more comprehensive deal that would cover the Strait of Hormuz and the nuclear program of the Islamic Republic.
According to this report, Washington hopes to increase economic pressure on Tehran by protecting shipping and boosting oil transits through the Strait of Hormuz, while at the same time maintaining a naval blockade and intensifying sanctions. In return, the Islamic Republic has threatened that if it cannot export oil, it will not allow other Gulf producers to export freely as well.
Financial Times wrote that Tehran still considers control of the Strait of Hormuz its most important lever of pressure, and for its full reopening, is calling for the lifting of the U.S. blockade, the resumption of exemptions for oil sales, and access to part of its assets that have been frozen abroad.
