Emma Bonino, who rose to political prominence in Italy as a leader of Radical Party campaigns that helped secure the legalization of abortion and divorce in the 1970s, has died at the age of 78.
In a dynamic career spanning five decades, Bonino was repeatedly elected to the Italian and European parliaments and served as Italy’s foreign minister and European affairs minister in Rome.
Bonino co-founded the death penalty watchdog Hands Off Cain and, in 2017, co-founded +Europa, a pro-European political party.
She was best known as an outspoken feminist and human rights campaigner, advocating for causes including women’s rights, migrant rights and humanitarian aid.
