Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on imports from the United States went into effect at dawn on Tuesday, intensifying the trade war between the two countries. Based on a statement by the Canadian government, the tariffs range from 15% to 50% and are equivalent to nearly $20 billion in U.S. dollars.

More than 700 categories of goods are covered; from steel and aluminum to dairy products, household appliances, agricultural machinery, paper, plastic, and electronic equipment. Tariffs on U.S. steel and aluminum were doubled and raised to 50%.

Mark Carney, Canada’s prime minister, said: “Canada responds dollar for dollar to Washington’s new tariffs to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses.”

Ottawa also announced a $7.5 billion package to support businesses harmed by the measures.
