In response to threats made by a spokesperson for the Islamic Republic’s Armed Forces against Iranian journalists abroad, Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Iran International that Canada strongly condemns the Iranian government’s threats against journalists, both inside and outside the country, and firmly supports the media’s right to operate.
In the statement, the ministry added that freedom of the media is an important part of democratic societies and a prerequisite for protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms, and that citizens need access to accurate information, informed analysis, and media that can help keep governments accountable.
Referring to this country’s membership among the founding members of the “Media Freedom Coalition,” the ministry said: “Canada strongly condemns the Iranian government’s threats against journalists, both inside and outside the country.”
The ministry added that journalists, activists, and members of the media should be able to continue their professional work without fear of retaliatory actions, political interference, threats, or intimidation.
