🔶 Company bankruptcies in Germany continue to rise
The number of company bankruptcies in Germany remains at a high level. Based on data from the Federal Statistical Office, in April, 2,276 companies informed the courts that they were unable to pay their debts. This figure is up 7.1% compared with April of last year.
In total, in the first four months of the year, the number of company insolvency cases increased by 6.7% compared with the same period last year.
During this period, 8,551 insolvency cases were filed.
The claims of creditors in these cases were reported at around €13.9 billion. In the comparable period last year, the figure was €22.5 billion.
The Federal Statistical Office attributed this decline to the fact that in the first four months of 2025, larger companies had filed for insolvency.
In the first four months of the year, 24.1 insolvency cases were recorded per 10,000 companies.
The transport and warehousing sector had the highest rate, with 43.9 insolvency cases per 10,000 companies. After that, the hospitality and restaurant sector and construction come next.
When reviewing these figures, it should be noted that insolvency filings enter the official statistics only after the court’s first decision.
For this reason, the actual time of filing in many cases was close to three months before the statistics were published.
The Leibniz Institute for Economic Research in Halle also said that the number of bankruptcies among both personal and corporate companies has reached the highest level in more than 20 years.
According to this report, in the first half of the year, 4,996 insolvency cases were registered, the highest figure since the second quarter of 2005.
Researchers at the institute said that the increase in bankruptcies has simultaneously affected many industries and regions across Germany.
