The Coalition Against Nuclear Iran, which also tracks ships linked to the Islamic Republic, said it has been informed that the automatic identification system of Iran’s oil-smuggling tankers, known as the “shadow fleet,” has been turned on. According to the report, 50 oil tankers carrying Iranian oil that are listed in the “shadow fleet” are currently anchored in waters in the eastern approaches outside the ports around Malaysia and Singapore, or are roaming; a situation that indicates this fleet continues to operate in maritime lanes in Southeast Asia with impunity from punishment. Before the ceasefire agreement and, as a result, the granting of a two-month U.S. exemption for exports of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s oil, the shadow fleet would turn off the ships’ automatic identification system to conceal its activities. The Coalition Against Nuclear Iran also says that after the removal of the U.S. maritime blockade against the Islamic Republic, 49 million barrels of Iranian oil worth $4 billion have been sent to waters near Malaysia and Singapore, but likely, as in the sanctions era, these cargoes will be routed to China after being transferred to other ships.
