🔶 Scientists Say Creatine May Help Treat Depression
Based on a new scientific review, creatine—known more as a popular sports supplement for building muscle—may have hidden potential for improving mental health. However, scientists emphasize that while the available evidence is promising, it is not yet conclusive or convincing.
In this new research, the results of which were published in the scientific journal Brain Medicine, the researchers examined the hypothesis of whether creatine could help relieve symptoms of depression by supplying energy to the brain.
A team of researchers from the University of Ottawa in Canada, rather than conducting a new experiment, reanalyzed data from five previously conducted randomized clinical trials. In these studies, a total of 238 participants (with an average age of 36, and mostly women) were assigned to groups receiving creatine or a placebo.
The findings of this review show a dual and contradictory picture: two studies, both conducted on women with major depressive disorder, showed that adding creatine to the standard treatment process was effective.
