In short

WhatsApp encrypts personal messages and calls end to end by default. Telegram uses a separate Secret Chat for private end-to-end encrypted messaging; ordinary chats use cloud storage. [1][2] For people in Iran, checking unofficial clients, connected devices and backup settings is part of choosing a safer conversation. [5][8][10]

Key takeaways

  1. Compare the exact feature: Telegram group calls and ordinary group messages have different encryption arrangements.
  2. Check backup protection separately from protection for messages in transit.
  3. Identify the developer of an unofficial client before trusting it with an account.
  4. Review linked devices and permissions before sharing sensitive information.

Is Telegram or WhatsApp safer for private conversations?

For an ordinary private conversation, WhatsApp has the simpler encryption default: personal messages and calls use end-to-end encryption. Telegram's ordinary private and group chats are Cloud Chats; its separate Secret Chats provide end-to-end encryption for one-to-one messaging. Choose the conversation type before sending something sensitive. [1][2]

For people in Iran, the choice also includes the app installed on the phone. A familiar Telegram logo does not establish who built that particular app. Start from Telegram's own applications page when checking an installer, rather than trusting a forwarded download or an attractive name. [7]

As of November 4, 2026, a useful decision has three parts: which conversation needs protection, which devices can open it, and which software handles it. For example, distinguish a family group arranging dinner from a private exchange containing somebody's identity documents. Decide what actually needs sending before comparing extra features. This is general security information, not a personal assessment of a targeted surveillance threat.

What does end-to-end encryption protect?

End-to-end encryption protects message content between the participating devices. It does not turn the people receiving a message into trusted custodians. When planning a sensitive exchange, agree who should receive the information and whether it needs to be retained. A private channel of delivery is only one part of that decision. WhatsApp describes this protection for personal messages, media and calls. [2]

Telegram's privacy policy distinguishes cloud storage from Secret Chats: Cloud Chat messages and media are stored on its servers, while Secret Chats use keys held at the ends of the conversation and are not stored as cloud history. These are different designs, even though both involve encryption. Calling all Telegram messages end-to-end encrypted erases that difference. [3]

Compare similar activities. Reading a public announcement, sending a personal message and speaking in a group call are different tasks. A public announcement may be intended for broad circulation; a medical document may require a much smaller audience. Write down the intended audience before choosing a feature. Avoid treating a platform's broad security description as a reason to share everything in the same place.

Are Telegram groups and group calls encrypted in the same way?

No. Telegram's ordinary group messages are Cloud Chats. A Secret Chat is a separate conversation with an individual, tied to the devices where it was created. It is not a switch that changes an existing Telegram group into an end-to-end encrypted group. [1]

Telegram introduced an end-to-end encrypted group-call feature on April 30, 2025. Its announcement explains how participants can compare the four displayed verification emojis. This means the statement “Telegram has no end-to-end encrypted group communication” is too broad. The accurate distinction is between ordinary group message history and the newer group-call feature. [4]

Before a sensitive call, agree who is expected to join. Use the verification method described for that feature if participants need to check the connection together. Do not send a call invitation to a large public audience when the discussion is intended for a few people. Treat choosing participants, checking the call and deciding what may be recorded as separate responsibilities; the encryption label alone does not settle the whole meeting plan. [4]

What happens to backups and old conversations?

WhatsApp offers an optional end-to-end encrypted backup for chat history stored in Google Drive or iCloud. Its backup announcement says that neither WhatsApp nor the backup provider can read that encrypted backup or access the key needed to unlock it. Check the actual backup setting instead of assuming the protection for live messages automatically covers every stored copy. [5]

There is also a newer recovery choice. WhatsApp announced passkey-encrypted backups on October 30, 2025, with gradual availability. This uses a fingerprint, face or screen-lock code instead of requiring someone to remember a separate backup password or long encryption key. Follow the choices displayed in the current app; an older tutorial may omit this option. [6]

Telegram's Secret Chats do not follow the account onto every new device. Logging out loses those Secret Chats on that device. Before replacing a phone or removing an installation, decide which information you still need and how it can be retained appropriately. Do not promise a contact that all conversation history will return merely because the account can be recovered. [1]

Why are Talaeii, Hotgram and other unofficial clients a concern?

An unofficial client is software made by another developer to access a service. That category is not identical to malware: Telegram itself distinguishes official and unofficial applications on its website. The important question is who controls the particular software that handles the account, not whether its icon looks familiar. [7]

The Iranian examples have a documented history. In December 2018, the Center for Human Rights in Iran reported Telegram's warning about Telegram Talaeii and Hotgram. CHRI described censorship by these clients and risks associated with their infrastructure and reported links to Iranian security bodies. These are findings about named products in that period, not a current count of users or evidence about every app with a similar name today. [8]

That history gives a practical reason to question promises such as extra privacy or easier access. Ask for the developer's identity and a verifiable distribution page. Do not supply an account login merely to investigate an unfamiliar app. If the only information available is a forwarded promotional message, leave the installation decision unresolved until the software can be identified.

What has research actually found in malicious copies?

ESET's August 2023 investigation found a malicious Telegram-based Android app called FlyGram. It collected device information and sensitive data such as contacts and call logs. The researchers also examined an added backup feature that sent Telegram-related data to an attacker-controlled server. Their report specifically says those backups did not contain actual messages. [9]

This matters because “a malicious Telegram copy” does not automatically mean “every message was stolen.” Different software can collect different information. The useful lesson is to identify the installation, its permissions and the affected accounts before deciding what may have been exposed. ESET also found distribution through app stores, so store availability alone did not prevent that particular campaign. [9]

For an ordinary reader, a sensible response to such a report is to compare the exact app name and developer with the installed product. Avoid downloading the reported sample to see what it looks like. If helping a relative, ask for the app's information screen without requesting their login code or forwarding their private conversations. Keep the investigation focused on identifying the software.

How can you check devices and app permissions?

Start with account access. Telegram's Devices settings show connected devices and offer controls to terminate sessions. Review computers and phones you no longer use, particularly a shared computer or a device handed to someone else. Removing an app from one phone and reviewing account sessions are different tasks. [10]

WhatsApp's linked-device guidance similarly explains how to identify and unlink a device you do not recognize. Review that list from the phone you control. If an entry is uncertain, compare it with your own computers and tablets before assuming a criminal intrusion; if it is not yours, end that access. [11]

On Android, review the installed app under Settings, Apps, then Permissions; wording can differ by device. Google explains the separate permissions for contacts, call logs, microphone and other information. Compare each permission with the feature you intend to use. A voice message and a text-only exchange do not call for the same immediate access. [12]

Make this a short review with a clear end: identify the installation, remove unwanted sessions, then review unnecessary permissions. Avoid asking a helper to take over the account to perform these checks. If account access has already been lost, use Pouyam's account recovery guide for the separate recovery problem.

Can encryption make an account anonymous or stop scams?

Encryption of message content is not a promise that a provider holds no account data. Telegram's policy says it may disclose an IP address and phone number after legal analysis of a qualifying valid judicial order concerning criminal activity that violates its terms. That policy does not establish what happened to a particular Iranian user's data. [3]

Fraud also requires attention to the sender and request. WhatsApp provides reporting and blocking tools for unwanted contacts and suspicious messages. An encrypted delivery channel does not make an unexpected payment request trustworthy. When somebody asks for money, pause the payment decision and verify the request through contact details you already trust. [13]

For everyday use, review who can see your profile and online activity, and who can add you to groups. WhatsApp offers controls for those choices. Set them according to your intended audience, rather than treating one setting as proof that the entire account is hidden. [2]

Keep separate questions separate: “Can this network read the message?”, “Is this really my friend?”, and “Should I send this document?” A reassuring answer to the first question does not answer the other two. Discuss the purpose of an exchange before sharing information about another person.

Choose a conversation, then review the whole arrangement

Use a simple plan for the next sensitive exchange. First, name the audience and the information that actually needs to be shared. Second, check the chosen feature's protection and whether you need message history later. Third, review the devices involved. Fourth, agree with the recipient about keeping or deleting the material.

For WhatsApp, include the backup decision in that review: protecting an online backup is an explicit option. If you enable it, understand the recovery method you chose before relying on it. Do not ask a friend to hold a secret recovery value in an ordinary group conversation. [5][6]

For Telegram, begin software checks at its applications page. Where someone offers a modified installer, ask why it is necessary and who maintains it. A useful feature does not remove the need to identify the developer. Prefer a decision you can explain in plain language over an impressive list of security claims. [7]

For a household, agree on a familiar way to confirm unusual requests and decide who can help with settings. Avoid sharing login credentials as a shortcut to support. Pouyam's online security guides cover related account and device questions without requiring every conversation to become a technical exercise.

Common mistakes

  • Calling every Telegram conversation end-to-end encrypted.

Fix: Check whether you are using a Cloud Chat, Secret Chat or the newer group-call feature.

  • Treating an unfamiliar Telegram-branded app as the original.

Fix: Identify its developer and compare the download route with Telegram’s own applications page.

  • Assuming an encrypted conversation has an equally protected backup.

Fix: Review the backup option and the recovery method before relying on it.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Telegram group become secret if an administrator changes its name?

No. Renaming a group does not change its Cloud Chat design. Secret Chats are separate one-to-one conversations. [1]

Are all unofficial Telegram apps spyware?

No. Unofficial describes who develops the client. Named malicious products require specific evidence; Telegram also lists unofficial applications separately. [7][9]

Does changing phones restore Telegram Secret Chats?

No. Secret Chats are device-specific and do not follow a new login. Plan before replacing the device. [1]

Does a genuine WhatsApp account make a money request safe?

No. Verify an unexpected request separately. Use reporting or blocking when appropriate rather than continuing a suspicious exchange. [13]
