According to reports, a 55-year-old bystander was also injured. Reports published say that one of the Basij members died at the scene and the other died after being transferred to a medical center.

That same night, Fars News Agency, after the end of the funeral ceremony of Ali Khamenei in Mashhad, wrote—citing the security deputy of the governor of Razavi Khorasan—that the identities of the killed and the cause of the incident were not yet known and that the shooting took place more than 15 kilometers away from the shrine.

The IRGC later identified both killed as Basij members. Officials have not yet published clear explanations regarding the identity of the attackers, the motive for the shooting, any possible arrest of those responsible, or whether this patrol was connected to the security measures on the day of the funeral.
