The interior minister of the Islamic Republic said the purpose of his trip to Pakistan is to follow up on the agreements of the president’s trip to this country a month ago.

At the outset of his arrival in Pakistan, Asadollah Momeni said that delegations from the ministries of interior, oil, agriculture jihad, and roads and urban development are accompanying him.

He said that based on the agreement reached, the volume of trade between the two countries, which is now about three billion dollars, should in the first step reach 10 billion dollars. According to him, achieving this goal requires the daily movement of around two thousand trucks or containers between the two countries, while at present only about 20% of this capacity has been realized.

Momeni added that regional developments are also among the topics of discussions during this trip.

Ismail Baghaei, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had previously described the trip as bilateral and based on prior planning, and had made no mention of Pakistan’s role in mediating between the Islamic Republic and the United States.

Islamabad has been the main channel for this mediation for months, and the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries last month is known by the name of this city.
