📰 Report by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ):
Before Trump left the White House for Turkey on Monday night, Marco Rubio and Pete Hegseth briefed him on reports alleging that Iran has been attacking commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz with cruise missiles and suicide drones, and that three vessels—including an LNG tanker—were targeted.
After these reports, Trump raised the question of whether Tehran still remains committed to reaching a final agreement; and after consulting with senior national security advisers, he concluded that the answer was no.
According to the report, this meeting was a turning point after which Trump:
- dropped the temporary ceasefire framework, - approved new military attacks on Iranian targets around the Strait of Hormuz, - revoked authorization for the sale of Iranian oil, - and intensified economic pressures again.
However, he has not yet issued an order to return a naval blockade by the U.S. Navy, but American officials have said that the country’s ships are still deployed in the region and, if an order is issued, they will be ready to carry it out.
