Qatar’s prime minister and foreign minister stressed the need for all parties to adhere to dialogue and to implement the agreement between the United States and the Islamic Republic.

On Sunday, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, in a telephone conversation with Oman’s foreign minister, said that this agreement includes freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and respect for Oman’s sovereignty over its territorial waters.

Based on a statement from Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two sides discussed regional developments, in particular ongoing diplomatic efforts and closer coordination to reduce tensions. Qatar’s prime minister emphasized that his country supports all efforts to reach a comprehensive agreement that would ensure lasting peace in the region.

The explicit reference to Oman’s sovereignty over its territorial waters is being made at a time when the Islamic Republic does not recognize the southern route of the Strait of Hormuz, which runs through Oman’s waters.

Kazem Gharibabadi, legal and international affairs deputy at the Islamic Republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had said that the country would “assert” its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz “at any cost,” and would not accept the southern route “under any circumstances.”
