India’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the deputy ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in New Delhi after an Indian sailor was killed in a missile attack on the Mombasa oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz.
In the Tuesday early-morning attack on two UAE tankers, one Indian crew member was killed and eight people, including six Indian nationals, were injured. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has taken responsibility for the attack.
Since the start of the war, at least seven Indian sailors have been killed in the regional waters, and New Delhi had previously summoned both the ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the chargé d’affaires of the U.S. Embassy in protest at attacks on ships carrying crews from India. India’s shipping industry is one of the largest suppliers of crew members for the world’s commercial ships.
