Donald Trump’s special envoy announced that Belarus has agreed to release 25 prisoners in exchange for further easing of U.S. sanctions.
John Cole said in Minsk to reporters: “We reached an interim agreement, and Belarus, as a sign of good will, will release 25 people, and in return, the United States will lift sanctions on two companies.”
The two companies subject to the sanctions relief are LacoKraska, a producer of industrial paints and coatings, and Bellesbumprom, a state-owned forestry and paper holding.
The Viasna human rights organization says Belarus still has more than 900 political prisoners.
