In the government’s announcement, it said the decision was made after multiple requests from different provinces of the country, so that “it would be possible for different segments of the public to participate widely in the mourning, farewell, and funeral procession ceremonies for the former leader of the Islamic Republic.” The government said the purpose of this holiday is to provide suitable conditions for people’s presence at the funeral ceremonies of Ali Khamenei. The public farewell ceremony with Ali Khamenei, the former leader of the Islamic Republic, officially began on Saturday, 13 Tir (July 4), after the opening of the northern doors of Tehran’s Mosalla. Domestic media report that large crowds have been present at the venue. Ali Khamenei was killed on February 28 this year, during an Israeli airstrike on the location where he was staying in Tehran, along with four members of his family. The strike took place at the beginning of the war between Iran, the United States, and Israel; a war that was halted after more than five weeks, with the establishment of a ceasefire.
