The New York Times, citing U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), says American forces have targeted more than 170 military sites along Iran’s coasts during the past two days near the Strait of Hormuz. These targets included air defense systems, drone and missile storage sites, military speedboats, and logistical infrastructure.
CENTCOM said the purpose of the operation was to reduce Iran’s ability to attack commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. newspaper added that the number of these attacks is about 14 times the number of targets that Washington hit during the latest round of escalation of tensions in June.
On Thursday, 18 Tir, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said that U.S. military attacks would not only bring about Iran’s “decisive response,” but would also disrupt vital maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement, the IRGC said that maritime traffic had returned to 50% of its pre-war level, but that “adventures and interventions” by Washington in setting shipping routes are the cause of the current disruptions. The IRGC, however, claims that the Islamic Republic is trying to increase the capacity for the passage of vessels that obtain “permission” from the IRGC in accordance with “security regulations.”
