🔶 Corpses with gold in their mouths; discovery of 2,000-year-old tombs in Egypt Archaeologists on the Mediterranean coast in Egypt have discovered several tombs from approximately 2,000 years ago. According to Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, some of the very ancient tombs found in Marina El Alamein were still intact and untouched even after nearly 2,000 years. In addition, in a desert in the west of this country, located in North Africa, the remains of a city from the Byzantine era were brought to light from beneath the soil. According to the ministry’s statement, the tombs in Marina El Alamein were found about 100 kilometers west of Alexandria. The report says that slightly earlier, during excavations in the same area, 18 tombs from the Greek-Roman period had also been discovered. A granite stone sarcophagus measuring about two and a half meters long was still intact inside the sarcophagus; a development that indicates this sarcophagus had been sealed for nearly 2,000 years. Archaeologists found human remains, pottery items, ceramic jars, and other funerary objects within the tombs themselves. Among the most important findings were 24 golden objects placed in the mouths of several corpses; an ancient burial-related ritual linked to beliefs about the afterlife.
