🔶 Ali Khamenei was buried in Mashhad
The body of Ali Khamenei, the second Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, after various ceremonies in cities including Tehran, Qom, Najaf, Karbala and Mashhad, was finally buried on Thursday evening, 18 Tir (July 9), in the presence of a group of family members and officials, in part of the shrine of the Eighth Imam of Shiites in Mashhad.
Ali Khamenei was killed on 9 Esfand 1404 (Dec. 29, 2025), in the early hours of the attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran, along with a number of senior officials and some members of his family at the Supreme Leader’s office in Tehran. Islamic Republic officials delayed Ali Khamenei’s burial ceremonies by more than 131 days.
Mustafa Khamenei, the eldest son of Ali Khamenei, led the final funeral prayer. At the burial ceremony in Mashhad as well, Mojtaba Khamenei, the new leader of the Islamic Republic, was absent.
According to political observers, the Islamic Republic tried to use Ali Khamenei’s farewell ceremony to revive the regime’s legitimacy. During the funeral procession, mourners supporting the government chanted harsh slogans against the United States and the president of that country, calling for revenge against the United States and for the killing of Donald Trump. Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf, the speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, had also stated in a statement he released to thank for the holding of Khamenei’s funeral procession in Iraq, emphasizing that the ceremony was not “simply a farewell and mourning,” but rather an announcement of “blood vengeance” for killing Khamenei.
Donald Trump had previously said that Iran was given the opportunity to hold Ali Khamenei’s burial ceremony, but after Iran’s attack on commercial ships and in the final days of Ali Khamenei’s funeral procession, the United States carried out attacks against Iranian positions, especially in southern cities.
