Taiwan said Monday that it detected dozens of Chinese military aircraft and naval vessels around the island as Beijing carried out large-scale drills in the Taiwan Strait. The activity comes amid already tense relations and renewed concern over pressure on Taiwan’s airspace and waters.
According to Taiwan’s defense ministry, the movements were tracked as part of a broader Chinese exercise near the island. Taiwan has repeatedly warned that such operations raise the risk of miscalculation and could further destabilize the region.
The latest drills add to a pattern of escalating military signaling from Beijing, which views Taiwan as part of its territory. Taipei, meanwhile, continues to frame the deployments as a direct threat to its security and a challenge to regional stability.
The incident underscores how the Taiwan Strait remains one of the world’s most sensitive flashpoints, where military activity can quickly heighten the danger of confrontation.
