UN human rights commissioner: Artificial intelligence could pose an “existential” threat to humanity

🔸The UN human rights commissioner warned on Monday, 16 Shahrivar, that artificial intelligence could create a threat to humanity, and promised to pressure AI companies to reduce risks that include “disrupting services, communications and democratic mechanisms.”

🔸Volker Türk, in a speech delivered before the start of his second four-year term at the UN human rights body, called for “ironclad guarantees” to ensure the safety and security of artificial intelligence.

🔸He also called for an investigation into deaths that are said to have occurred in immigration detention in the United States, and condemned reports about Russia’s use of its autonomous drones.

🔸At a meeting of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, the UN human rights commissioner said that he shares the concerns of experts who believe that advanced AI may pose an existential threat to humanity.

🔸He added: “I am calling today for an all-out effort to provide ironclad guarantees around the safety and security of artificial intelligence, before it is too late.”

🔸Mr. Türk did not elaborate further on the nature of the risks, but a spokesperson for his office said that flaws in powerful AI systems could disrupt critical infrastructure and democratic institutions.
