🔶 U.S. CENTCOM: A maritime blockade of Iran will be reinstated from Tuesday morning
A U.S. official announced on Monday that the U.S. military is preparing to resume a blockade of ships that travel to and from Iranian ports.
The move comes after U.S. President Donald Trump said he would reinstate restrictions for some ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz and also impose fees on commercial vessels.
Timothy Hawkins, a spokesperson for U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), told CNN: “Coordination for the re-implementation of the blockade is currently under way, and more details regarding the time it will begin and how it will be carried out are expected to be announced in the coming hours.”
He did not comment on the issue of charging vessels, which Trump had said would be 20% of the value of each ship’s cargo, and referred the matter to the White House.
U.S. military officials also told CNN that U.S. forces faced several challenges during the previous implementation of the blockade, and they have now again been assigned to carry out such an operation.
These officials said: “There was no formal guidance for carrying out a blockade on this scale, and the U.S. military hasn’t carried out such an operation for decades; the most recent case dates back to the Cuban Missile Crisis.”
Meanwhile, CENTCOM said in a statement on X that the forces of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) would resume the maritime blockade of ship traffic to and from Iranian ports starting at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time on July 14 (Tuesday morning, 23 Tir).
CENTCOM forces will carry out this blockade against all ships that move toward Iranian ports and coastal areas or leave them.
The U.S. Army has announced that it will continue to support the passage of other vessels that do not violate the blockade in the waters of the region.
