🔶 Mamdani: New York does not have legal authority to detain Netanyahu
Zehraan Mamdani, the mayor of New York, backed away from her previous position regarding the detention of Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel. She said that legal reviews have shown that this city does not have the ability to carry out an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against Netanyahu.
In a video she posted on X (formerly Twitter), Mamdani said: “My administrative apparatus has examined all the options available under current laws.” She nonetheless called Netanyahu a “war criminal” and emphasized that the Israeli prime minister would not be met with a welcome in New York.
During the election campaigns, the mayor of New York had promised that if elected as mayor, she would arrest Netanyahu, but later announced that the matter required a legal review.
Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to travel to New York in September to attend a session of the United Nations General Assembly.
