Bloomberg reported that a liquefied natural gas cargo ship belonging to Qatar’s state shipping company, Nakilat, was hit by a projectile as it was leaving the Strait of Hormuz and near the coasts of Oman, and it caught fire. According to Bloomberg, the attack took place about eight nautical miles east of the Omani city of Lima, and the security firm AOS Risk assessed it as a drone or missile attack. The UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre had previously warned about a projectile striking an unidentified vessel, but did not name the ship. The incident is especially sensitive because Qatar is both one of the world’s largest exporters of liquefied natural gas and, in recent weeks, has been a mediator in negotiations between the United States and the Islamic Republic. Axios also previously reported, citing two American officials, that Iranian military forces fired at least two missiles toward commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday night.
