— An August 7 U.S. Air Force email obtained by CBS News shows that Pentagon officials have instructed employees to stop using the title “Operation Epic Fury” and instead describe the operation as “a cross-border operation within U.S. Central Command’s (CENTCOM) area of responsibility.”

The directive was issued by Pete Hegseth’s Office of Public Affairs, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, and requires CENTCOM approval for public information publication. Officials said the directive was distributed across the U.S. Department of Defense in the months of August and September.

However, the timing of the directive has raised questions; because some U.S. forces that were killed or injured after May 5 had initially been recorded as casualties of “Operation Epic Fury,” and Pentagon records still have some casualties from the months of June and July registered under this operation; this comes while, according to the Pentagon’s claim, the operation ended on May 5.
