A senior U.S. official who spoke to journalists in a briefing session on Friday evening said that the Islamic Republic has admitted its mistake in the attacks on commercial vessels.
CBS, citing this U.S. official, wrote that the Islamic Republic’s Iranian officials, in private discussions with Trump’s advisers, explicitly stated that firing at commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz was a “mistake.”
According to this report, the Iranian side claimed that these missile attacks were carried out by a “rogue and wrong” group of domestic hardliners whose aim was to bring the talks to a deadlock and undermine the path of peace negotiations.
The U.S. official said: “They returned to the negotiating table and said we messed up. We made a mistake. Let’s continue the talks.”
At this same briefing session, the U.S. official said that the United States considers these attacks a clear violation of the ceasefire and has announced that the Islamic Republic must publicly and openly accept and acknowledge this “mistake.”
