The funeral procession for Ali Khamenei, the slain leader of the Islamic Republic, along with a number of his family members, began on Friday, 12 Tir, at Tehran’s Mosalla. The ceremony is the first stage of a multi-day program that is set to be held in Tehran, Qom, Najaf, Karbala, and ultimately Mashhad. One notable aspect of the ceremony was the continuation of Majtaba Khamenei’s absence, the current leader of the Islamic Republic. He was introduced as his father’s successor after his father was killed, and to date he has not attended any public ceremony related to the funeral procession.
