China deployed a flotilla of warships and fighter jets near the Taiwan Strait after a visit to Taipei by a U.S. congressional delegation and renewed American pledges of support for Taiwan’s defense. Beijing condemned the trip as provocative interference in its internal affairs and said the military activity was intended to underscore its sovereignty claims over the island.

According to Chinese state media and regional observers, the drills included live-fire exercises and coordinated air and naval maneuvers. The show of force comes amid already elevated tensions across the strait, where both sides have increased military activity in recent years.
