Pete Hegseth, the US defense secretary, after the death of Lindsey Graham, the Republican senator, wrote by sharing pictures of him: “A tough hero for the armed forces, veterans, and our country; heartfelt patriotism.”

Hegseth, pointing to two decades of knowing Graham, added: “He was a pioneer, both in uniform and in the Senate.”
