🔸The pro–Islamic Republic foreign ministry of Peru accused the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran of provoking “the escalation of hostilities” in the Middle East and creating an obstacle to maritime transit in the Strait of Hormuz, and said it has cut its diplomatic relations with Iran.

🔸In a statement released by Peru’s foreign ministry on Tuesday, September 10 (Shahrivar 10), it said the country’s government, “in keeping with its historical commitment to peace, firm adherence to international law, and the defense of democracy and human rights,” decided to cut its diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

🔸The ministry said in its statement that the decision was taken “in response to insistence on escalating hostilities in the Middle East, the imposition of severe restrictions by the Iranian regime, and disruption of international trade through the Strait of Hormuz.”

🔸The Peruvian foreign ministry also expressed concern about what it called “the erosion of democracy” in Iran, referring to the crackdown on peaceful protests, violations of press freedom, discrimination against women and girls, and harassment of political opponents, and wrote that these issues have been condemned by UN mechanisms.

🔸A few days ago, Chile, Peru’s neighbor, had also reported the closure of its embassy in Tehran.
